Salvador Dali
Date of birth : May 11, 1904
Date of death: January 23, 1989
Biography: He was a Spanish surrealist painter born in Catalonia – Spain.
Spanish painter, sculptor, graphic artist, and designer. After passing through phases of Cubism, Futurism and Metaphysical painting, he joined the Surrealists in 1929 and his talent for self-publicity rapidly made him the most famous representative of the movement. Throughout his life he cultivated eccentricity and exhibitionism (one of his most famous acts was appearing in a diving suit at the opening of the London Surrealist exhibition in 1936).
In 1937 DalĂ visited Italy and adopted a more traditional style. He moved to the USA in 1940 and remained there until 1955. During this time he devoted himself largely to self-publicity; his paintings were often on religious themes (The Crucifixion of St John of the Cross, Glasgow Art Gallery), although sexual subjects and pictures centring on his wife Gala were also continuing preoccupations. In 1955 he returned to Spain and in old age became a recluse.
In 1929 Salvador Dali met his wife Helena Diakonova, a Russian immigrant that was already married and was more than 10 years older than him. Know as "Gala" she became Dali's muse, lover, supporter and business manager. The couple were married in 1934 and she remained a major part of Dali's life up until his death.
Salvador Dali was a wealthy artist during his lifetime. He understood how to attract media attention and paved the way for media savvy artists like Pop Artist Andy Warhol. Dali had two museums dedicated to his life and work while he was still living.
His works continue to fetch increasingly high prices in art auction houses throughout the world today.
Title of painting: The Persistence of Memory
What is it about: It`s really strange picture. We can`t say what exactly what is on this picture. We can see some “flexible” watches and other things. On the backgrand there is a landscape.
